We were up and out the door by about 7:15 am for our day of driving south. I drove first. It is definitely a challenge to drive on the wrong side of the road. My main problem, other than turning the wrong way, is drifting over to the left hand side of the road, sometimes actually in two lanes at once. Not good. The car has license plates for the State of Victoria, so I imagine the Sydney/New South Wales drivers think those in Victoria don't know how to drive, not some crazy American!
Periodically I would hear, "Braille," or "You're killing me" from the other side of the car. I did get better. We stopped after about an hour and half at a truck stop-type of gas station/cafe/convenience store to get a bite of breakfast, and for me, some coffee! I can't believe I got that far without any! I asked for an egg and sausage muffin. The girl behind the counter could not believe that I didn't want any sauce, "tomato (ketchup)?" Yuk! Just pepper! The terminology for a cup of coffee is complicated, too. Long black, for black coffee and flat white if you want cappuccino without foam. I got cappuccino with foam in a travel mug. Yum! Then it was Trevor's turn to drive.
We also discovered that you can hook up your iPod or iPhone to the car's sound system. Trevor put on Jason Mraz first. Finally, while Trevor was driving, he said we should find some other music because Mraz was not driving kind of music, so we found the Glee songs. "Good," I said. "We can sing along to those!" And sing and drive we did! I also started taking pictures as we drove along.
And when we switched drivers again, I handed the camera to Trevor, saying, "You are in charge of the camera. Take pictures of anything that catches your eyes. As we neared our destination, we passed a sign that said Welcome to the Snowy Mountains, but we missed taking a picture of it. I said I was going to turn around and go back. Trevor was not happy with me, but I said too bad.
Here's where I don't have the proper way to turn down, but we found the sign, took pictures and were on our way once again. We stopped in Cooma for a bite of lunch at McDonalds. You can't get a plain ice tea at the McDonalds in Cooma. It's not even on the McCafe menu. Oh well. Back on the road, mountains came into view, even some distant ones with snow! The view of Lake Jindabyne as we came around a corner and down a hill was beautiful. I told Trevor that, I thought, Lake Jindabyne was created when they dammed the Snowy River. We actually drove over the dam, and guess what? There's a Snow River sign. Right again! Jindabyne is a small resort town. We drove past our accommodation before we knew it and had to turn back. We turned in the only spot we could see, or I should say I turned in and crazy driving commenced because we couldn't tell where to go. We finally just parked and walked up to the street until I realized we were really at the lobby doors. We walked in, and I said, "I hope we're in the right place!" The reservationists said, "Well, what's your surname?" I told her, and she said, yes we were! I once again showed our confirmation information, and we got the lay of the land. The other reservationist asked what brought us to Jindabyne, and I said, "The Man from Snowy River. We are going on a horseback ride tomorrow." We were assured that we had made a good choice, and it would be something we would always remember. I surely hope so! The Man from Snowy River is an iconic film in our family, and my niece Jessica is even named after Jessica in the movie, so this is a big deal that Trevor and I are going on the ride! Our room is nice and large with a view of the lake. After settling in, we went for a brief walk. The lake is flooded still. The woman who brought us some sheets for the sofa bed said that the lake had been up quite far. So . . . while I have been writing, Trevor is bored. The sun has gone down, and it's about time we found something for dinner before going to sleep!

| We found a little pizza joint that we liked so much, we went back the next evening! |
| Our Mexican pizza with ham, pepperoni, capsicum (red and green bell pepper), chili, cheese |

Renting a car means you can take the time to go back on something you missed...especially if you are the driver. And did you take a picture of the little place you stayed at...?? Those snaps always help me jog my memory. I have had issues with my comments before.. so we will see if this works. /d
ReplyDeleteYes I took pics of where we stayed. Will make some Facebook albums.
