Cowes to Melbourne—Friday, May 25

We woke to poring down rain! We were not in a real hurry this morning since the drive to Melbourne was about 2 hours, so we were able to enjoy a nice breakfast provided by our host Serena.

Serena had not been able to greet us the previous evening as an emergency took her to Melbourne before we arrived. I wish we had had more time at Holmwood since I felt like Serena was a kindred spirit. Her husband and son had just left for Spain where her son has been accepted into the second best cooking school in Europe. She was left behind with her son's 7 month old puppy, a cute little thing named Shadow. Serena's cat has not been happy since they acquired Shadow and is spending more time outside than Serena would like. Serena and her husband have also sold their business and will be moving in about 5 weeks, so she's worried about getting the cat accustomed to staying inside and tolerating Shadow. We talked about the dog whisperer's, Cesar Millan's, technique of using the sound "sht" to get a dog's attention, tried it on Shadow, and she seemed to pay very good attention, so I was glad to be able to give Serena a tip that may prove useful. Shadow followed Trevor and me back to our cottage where she was a perfect little girl while we gathered up our belongings to stow in the car.

There was not much music on this drive, mainly so we could pay attention to the road and to other cars in the pouring down rain. We made it to Melbourne without much ado, dropped our faithful little car at the Avis office, and walked a couple of blocks—did I say it was pouring down rain?—to our accommodation for the next 4 nights, Ibis Melbourne.

We got organized and headed back out again—did I say it was pouring down rain?—to explore a bit of Melbourne. We went to the Queen Victoria Market and started walking up and down the isles, viewing all the merchandise, and in search of an umbrella for me. We visited the money machines and looked for a place for lunch. Friends of Trevor's told him he should go to Lord of the Fries, which we did and where we discovered you could only take-away the fries, so we ended up across the street at Subway.

We walked a little further down Flinders Street by the train station and after seeing some of the sights, hopped aboard a free trolley in order to get a bit closer back to the hotel.

So here I am, trying to catch you all up on our adventures, and Trevor has gone out to meet a friend. We will be up early again tomorrow morning to go on a Great Ocean Road tour.
