Last Day in Melbourne — Monday, May 28

On our last day in Melbourne, we had planned to do some shopping at the Queen Victoria Market. As we walked up the street, Trevor remarked that we should have paid attention to opening times. It turned out that the market is closed on Mondays, so instead of market stalls bustling with shoppers, the area serves as a carpark.

Our shopping kaboshed, Trevor dragged me out to the end of nowhere to get some socks at a specific shop. He was on a mission and only slowed down to talk on the phone.

His socks in hand, Trevor says, "Now what do you want to do?" Well, I had no idea!

We went back into the main part of the city and got lunch at Lord of the Fries which we took to eat as we sat by the river. The gulls and finches put on a good show, and of course, I was in trouble as soon as I started to feed them.

The paths along the river are filled with runners and cyclists. After lunch, we walked along the first of two bridges. This one marked the immigration to Australia via Melbourne and had sculptures representing the different groups of people.

We walked on the other side of the river where there were cafes and a few shops, looped around by the arts center, then back on another main bridge into town.

Melbourne is known for its "cafe" society, so we ventured through some alleys open only to pedestrian traffic where people were eating and drinking al fresco.

The alleyways became arcades, or, what I would call a passage, with upscale shops. Around one corner, we came to Haigh's chocolates. This is reputed to be one of the best chocolatiers ever.

Yes, we bought chocolate. An item of interest is chocolate frogs that I immediately associated with Harry Potter. But no, at Haigh's, they have a variety of animals depicted in chocolate and funds from their purchase goes to help the species. The cashier was kind enough to give us some special bags for our chocolate since she had heard that we were having a heat wave??? I did see that a friend in Indiana posted something about record-breaking heat in her area on Facebook. In any case, our chocolate has special bags. We returned to our room to pack, and we had dinner at the Ibis' restaurant. Entirely too much food. We had another early morning with a shuttle to the airport for our next stop, Adelaide.
